Meet Julie Tucker, SVP, IV Large Property, North America
Please tell us about your career journey and your path to Sompo.
After studying Finance, Risk Management and Insurance at Appalachian State University, I spent 15 years in various roles with Royal Insurance / Royal & Sun Alliance in Charlotte, NC. I started in the underwriter training program, then went into regional multi-line underwriting, and on to National Programs. I moved over to Sompo when the “Asia Branch” with Royal was acquired and have been part of the Sompo family ever since. We have grown exponentially and experienced a lot of change in my 20 years here. We have never lost sight of our customers along the way. Large Property Underwriting for Japanese Interest Accounts (JIA) has been my specialty for over 14 years and has expanded to include other Asian owned accounts as well. As the Industry Vertical Technical Manager in this specialty, I support the large property underwriters on a referral basis; assist with the account and broker relationships, offering historical knowledge and insight; as well as managing a book of my own accounts.
What advice do you have for prospective Sompo candidates?
Make a positive difference. Explore and embrace our beautifully diverse culture. So much of what we do is about attitude and relationships. Look for opportunities to engage and don’t be afraid to ask “why?”. We are always looking for ways to improve and be more efficient. There is a place for you to thrive here.
Tell us about an initiative at Sompo that you are most excited about in 2023.
I am very excited about One Sompo! The opportunity to streamline our organization and offer additional resources adds a tremendous amount of value to the programs and services we extend to our customers.
What is your idea of a perfect day outside of the office?
Time with my family and friends is most important to me. If that time includes a sunny day at the beach with my toes in the sand, a fruity drink in my hand, and delicious seafood to enjoy, it would be even more perfect.
